When Sea Horse opened its doors in 1933, Finland was just recovering from the Prohibition era.
Wines arrived mainly from France, Spain, Portugal, and Germany.
French red wines were part of the celebrations of that time – symbols of newfound freedom and European sophistication.
Our wines are still European, representing the “Old World” tradition.

In 1918, Finland considered appointing Prince Friedrich Karl of Hesse as its king – a German nobleman from the same family line represented by the Prinz von Hessen wine estate today.
Finland had only recently gained independence, and the Parliament held a strong monarchist majority. They elected Friedrich Karl as the future King of Finland, but he was never crowned: the German Empire collapsed before he could arrive, and the plan was abandoned.
Still, this remarkable connection remains one of the most intriguing episodes in Finland’s formative years.
